The BCG NAMR 2016 tournament has come to an end, but not after an exciting day of camaraderie and competition on the field on July 23.
The Champions League tournament ended with Lisbon 1995, taking home the title, beating “We the North” in the finale, making it two major international tournaments in two weeks for the nation of Portugal. Special mention to Pedro Abrantes of Lisbon, second cousin to Ricardo Quaresma, whose calm play throughout the tournament helped take home the title.
In the Europa Cup, Team Manhattan took home the title for the host city after a tight encounter with the hard running and skill of Global Galaxy. This achievement means a complimentary entry into Soccer Resort’s Brooklyn tournament in October 2016 or March 2017 for Team Manhattan.
Strikers and midfielders regularly receive instant accolades, but goalkeepers rarely hit the same levels of praise. For this tournament, the Top Goalkeeper award goes to the goal keeper for Team Brooklyn, who had a track record of 0 goals conceded in the group stages. His feats have won a complimentary entry into Soccer Resort’s public Brooklyn tournament in October 2016 or March 2017 for team Brooklyn.
Special mention to all the unlucky semi-finalists Bruce’s originals A, as well as Boston BKA, Team “We the other”, and of course the highly compact Team Brooklyn.
Thanks to all 32 teams who came out to the event on Randall’s island NYC, with a hot day mitigated only by the Ice Cream, Gatorade, Water and occasional breeze from the East River.
The tournament included teams from across the U.S., Europe, Mexico and Latin America, but the most “nationally proud” team award took a detour when it was awarded to team Dallas. They showed up in Lone Star shirts, and were seen running around with the Texas flag at multiple times during the tournament in passion not even matched by the “still partying” Portuguese.
The happy accident award went to Christian of the San Francisco Surge who scored an important goal, but at the same time he took an accidental elbow in the eye (An Irish “kiss”) while doing it from the opposing goalkeeper. Result – a black eye, a great goal, and a nice story.
The Galaxy scored the “longest shot goal” of the tournament, with a goal from 20 yards, despite losing Phil to Pokemon Go who went from tournament hero to Pokemon Gym manager after wandering around Randall’s Island for several hours.
Bruce’s Original B won team of the tournament for their extreme “hanging out” approach at the tournament. We were informed by Noah W, that the team name is based on the founder of BCG. Special mention also to Toby Team Munich, who was voted by his team, as top manager of the tournament after he retrieved a second helping of Ice Cream tickets for his team mates
